Paid Vs. Free Coffee Table Plans
If you want to build a coffee table, then it is highly recommended to get a good set of plans. Blueprints will help you with every part of the process. They will give you a list of wood and parts you will need, show you all the dimensions so you know how to cut the wood, and there are steps to show you exactly what to do.
There are more experienced woodworkers who can make their own table without needing detailed instructions, but if you are not comfortable with building from scratch without anything to reference, then you will definitely want to get some plans to work from.
There are two types of plans: free plans and plans you pay for. There are books at stores that have lots of different woodworking plans, and there are sites online that you can buy individual plans from. If you do some searching, there are also some free coffee table plans available online.
Both types of plans have their pros and cons, so you will have to decide what is best for you. First of all, let’s talk about free plans. The obvious benefit of free plans is that they don’t cost a penny. The downside is that often free plans aren’t all that great. Sometimes woodworking sites offer free plans, but they don’t put as much effort into them as their paid products, so they are not always clear and easy to follow.
Paid plans are not free, but more often than not they are worth a bit of money. If you buy a book of plans, you will have multiple plans to work from and there will usually be a woodworking guide included. Plans you have to pay for are generally constructed better too, so they are a little easier to understand.
I personally think that if you are new to woodworking, it would be best to buy a book that has a woodworking guide and plans. This is the best way to ensure success for your builds. However, if you are an experienced woodworker, you might just want to look at some free plans to get your mind going so you can create your own work from scratch.

Different Types of Coffee Tables
Almost every family in America has a coffee table in their living room, but not all of them are the same. There are many different types of coffee tables to suit every family’s styles and needs.
For example, how you plan to use a coffee table is an important part of the buying (or building) process. If you live alone, you may want just a small table, but if you have a larger family and like to eat in front of the TV and set your food on the coffee table, then a bigger table is a good idea.
Many people want a nice looking coffee table to fit the style of their home, so they get a fancy table that is mainly for decoration. If you like to prop your feet up on the coffee table though, you may want one that is a little more sturdy and not quite so decorative. Some people have coffee tables that have drawers and shelves underneath for some extra storage space.
Another difference between coffee tables is their appearance. You can get square-ish looking basic tables, or fancy ones with handcarved legs and glass tops. Many people like painted tables (solid black for example), but lots of people also enjoy seeing the natural wood. Oak, maple, cherry, and walnut make nice looking tables.
There are also different styles of tables. For example, mission style coffee tables. They are based on that old home feel (think Amish, Quakers, and missionaries). These are nice tables for any family.
Of course, not everybody agrees on what kind of table is the best and it is always a personal decision what you buy. But in your case, I am assuming that you plan on building your own coffee table.
With a bit of work and time, building a coffee table is your best option. You can take all these things into consideration and decide exactly what you want your coffee table to be like. You can find some coffee table plans online and build from those blueprints, or if you are up to it you can use them as a springboard for your own design.

Free Coffee Table Plans For Your Home
If you enjoy woodworking, or if you are a DIY type of person, then building a coffee table for your home can be a great idea. It can be a fun project that will actually get some use from everyone in the family.
If you are a seasoned woodworker, then you may have all the materials and tools required for making a fancy coffee table, but there are many simpler coffee table plans that don’t require much woodworking experience and you don’t need many tools either.
There are lots of coffee table plans available, both in woodworking books and online. If you are serious about woodworking, then I recommend getting a book with lots of woodworking plans. But if you don’t build much, and this is the only building project you have lined up for a while, then you may want to just stick with some free plans.
There are lots of plans you can find for a range of skill levels, and some are better than others. But here are several free coffee table plans I have found that are pretty good and may be what you need for your project:

Popular Mechanics- This plan was included in Popular Mechanics and is a nice looking table.
CanadianHomeWorkshop- This is a smaller, fancier looking table.
Lowes coffee table- This is my personal favorite of these plans. It is a bit more complicated, but it looks great and has room for storage.
These are the best free plans I could find, but there are even more plans available online if you are willing to do a little searching. And if you get serious about woodworking (it is fun and addictive), then you may want to take my advice and get some good quality plans for your future projects.
